Poor Soccer
It blows my mind how Americans treat soccer. I get it, but I completely don’t. It is a sport that is hugely popular when you’re young, every single person you know played, but then is butchered. I remember fucking loving soccer. Maybe it was releasing the kid energy by running around like a lunatic, or the idea of chasing a ball made such simple sense. Or maybe it was because it was the only sport where you had orange slices at half time. Regardless, it was the shit. Then high school came and it was like “Uh yah, time to grow up” and it faded fast. While on two other continents, one right below us, it is a way of life where people lose their minds over it. So much so that hooligans actually exist. Yes, people love their team so much they are going to punch you in the fucking face to prove it. I know we have unruly fans here, and isolated incidents involving too much booze and flairs of testosterone occur, but not full blown riots. And this is the sport that we are completely indifferent to. Gun to my head, I couldn’t name who won the premier league or MLS championships, or likely name all the MLS teams. It makes sense to say that the reason it isn’t popular is because its long, not enough scoring, etc. But then the World Cup comes around and, like many other Americans, I become Socko, the soccer addict clown, losing my shit over a 0-0 tie between South Korea and Ecuador.
